When you think about the D-Day invasion that was a crucial step in the liberation of Western Europe from Germany control in World War II, one of the main images that likely comes to mind is the Higgins Boats that famously carried troops to the beaches of Normandy. Among the thousands of these small boats that were a key part of that June 1944 invasion was one operated by Yeoman Third Class J. Dewey “JD” Norr. JD, whose 100th birthday is this December, joined the U.S. Navy during WWII when he was 17 years old. After basic training, JD was deployed to the USS Anne Arundel Troop Ship, where, among other things, he helped with the pivotal Normandy invasion.
Community Nursing Services was honored to recognize JD, a hospice patient who lives in the northern Utah town of Deweyville, with a CNS Honor Salute this August. The CNS Military Volunteer team felt honored and privileged to recognize Yeoman Third Class Norr in a ceremony that included a rendition of the Navy Anthem, Anchors Away, and the presentation of a military quilt that was donated by a CNS volunteer, flag, and certificate of appreciation.
The CNS Honor Salute Program is a way to give one final tribute of appreciation to hospice patients who bravely served our country. The program is made possible thanks to the generous support of donors who volunteer their time or contribute monetary support. You can help support the Honor Salute Program by donating.
